About Us
Remember when you were a kid, and your friends "dared" you to do something? Essentially, that is how Mike and I met. We met on a "dare." Mike had been dared by his friends in Alaska to place a personal ad for a female companion. He had never done anything like this before, and after he prayed about it, he placed an ad in The National Singles Register, a Singles publication that is distributed nation-wide.
A month later, in Southern California, several of my friends got together and "dared" me to answer one ad in this muti-page publication. My best buddy Jeri, picked out the page for me to choose one ad on, and Mike's ad caught my eye. I promised to write to him, and though it took a few weeks, I did finally write the letter. This is the first time I had ever done anything so bold as this. Mike got boxes of letters in reply to his ad, and he went through them all, shared some with his kids, and decided to write back to a few. I was one of the lucky ones he picked.
We wrote for quite awhile, then started sending cassette tapes, then phone calls and eventually set up a meeting in Alaska. I flew out to meet him, and fell more in love with this gentle humorous man. I would return for one more trip- to see how I weathered the dark winters there. The rest, I guess you would say is history, and in Feb. 2001 Mike & I celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary. I not only got a wonderful man in the bargain, but four wonderful step-children, Doug, David, Dennis and Annette (all adults) and grand-children as well.
So how did our Life's adventures take us into knifemaking? A dear friend of mine, Molly, has a husband who loves to go hunting on Catalina Island for wild boar. One afternoon during a phone call, KC asked Mike if he could make him a knife that would be able to cut through the tough hide of these pigs. Not a dare, but a challenge, Mike said he would and that next evening out of an old power hacksaw blade .
Mike started to make KC a 4.5" skinner with a paccawood handle. It took about 2 weeks to finish, and once it was done, Mike took it to work and showed the guys.
This resulted in orders for 4 more knives, and from those came more orders. Thus, M & M Kustom Krafts came into being. On a side-note here, the gentleman KC is also now in the business, building knives, and cases as well as gun cases. His personal business is Just In Case, out of Riverside, California. So that is the story about how we evolved.
That first knife that started it all...
